Hand Knotted Gabbeh Rug From Iran (Persian)
In stock at our Olney showroom
ABOUT THIS RUG
Gabbeh rugs come from southern central Iran. Woven by nomadic travellers that inhabit a large area that include the Zagros mountain range. Most often attributed to the Qashgai people. More likely is that the rugs are woven by any of the tribal groups from the surrounding area. Luri, Khamseh or Afshah. For Gabbeh rugs are coarsely woven with a thick chunky pile They have fat warp and weft threads and that makes them quick to weave. The simplistic freeform designs are much simpler to weave than the traditional Persian rug designs. They are usually woven on horizontal looms that can be quickly staked out on the ground and just as easily taken up when it is time to move camp. For similar styles in a finer quality search for Luribaff rugs.
